Eels (often typeset as eels or EELS) is an American rock band formed by singer/songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, better known as E. Other members rotate frequently, both in the studio and on stage.

Eels appear on several film soundtracks, including American Beauty, Holes, The Anniversary Party, Knocked Up, Yes Man, The End of Violence, Hellboy II, Hot Fuzz, and the first three Shrek movies.

Friday was the deadline for our Sophomore Class project: Cookbooks from the Heart. Whew! Despite the snow that pelted the area, the early dismissal, and the wild? parties that were blazing in honor of the 2nd Quarter Honor Roll students, the 25 students turned in their three versions of the same book... All done in their own creative flair. Some groups worked well, but most suffered the usual woes of group participation: early excitement, latent boredom, some worker bees and some down-right drones. I also assigned them a 600 word reflective essay, which they LOVED. They got to tell me what they did or didn't do and why. They got to make a double entry journal about their classmates. They got to reflect on how they'd improve the project if they were teachers. Most importantly, they had a huge paragraph about what insight they had learned about themselves, which ran the gamut of "I learned I'm lazy!" to "I learned I LOVE to make layouts and create books!" I removed the last names of my students, and most of the recipes look solid... Mom noticed we turn on the oven for Peanut Brittle and never EVER use it...... haha... It's a grass roots project. If you would enjoy a great story, click on over to a new blog called New York Minute, a novel being written by Bevier C-4's Composition class. Right now, we are about a fourth finished with the novel, and you can read it online. Each addition will be placed toward the end of the blog (the posts usually reserved for the oldest. We want the book to read just like you would pick up a novel, so keep clicking "older posts" until you come to the end. We project we will finish in early February. I'll keep you posted but we will probably add photos to existing chapters and work on it nearly every day... Please leave us comments if you read our book!!!

The Classic Car Show was another big hit of the Sesqui Celebration. My fave was the yummy aqua-blue Thunderbird. I don't know anything about what was under the hood, but the chiffon scarf tied to the rear-view mirror was tres chic! I want that car. I NEED that car! But then again, every girl needs one. ~cg

The Black Diamond building served as "home base" during the Sesquicentennial Celebration. The displays of memorabilia, photos and artwork were fabulous. I could have spent days reading all the wonderful stuff in there! There were fun things to buy, and I know the free coffee and cookies were very much appreciated by the out-of-town guests, especially during the cool (but perfect) evenings. Once again, hats off to Patty Cheever and the entire committee for giving us such a fabulous event! ~cg

Those who boarded the tram for the historical tour of Bevier had the fortune to "meet" Dr. T.P. Gronoway in the home he used as a hospital in 1919...now meticulously restored and maintained by the Ricker family. ~cg

Cemetery Theatre - 1

I'm certain that the Cemetery Theatre at our Sesquicentennial celebration will be remembered for a long, long time. The presenters did a fabulous job and it was such a wonderful opportunity to hear about some of the people who have in some way touched the lives of everyone who has grown up or lived in Bevier. From the top:

Frank Chiarottino, the first Italian to settle in Bevier. He arrived in 1890 and his family has been growing strong ever since.

Robert (Bob) Lobmire, who will long be remembered as the guy who could remember...just about anything concerning Bevier!

Edi and Sita Pappenfoht...who came to this country to start a new life after WWII. The love and family spirit they brought to our community will live on for generations to come.

Hardie Smith, our "Mr. Fixit" who came to our rescue at all hours, in all weather. A true neighbor in every sense of the word.

Francis Dunn Jones, the Welsh immigrant who started the Bevier Appeal newspaper, a publication that not only chronicled our early history and family events, but also helped countless immigrants learn to read. ~cg

Cemetery Theatre - 2

The Cemetery Theatre continued...we heard from and about our beloved Bevier grocers Raymond "Pud" Weber and August Zuccarini, along with turn-of-the-century BHS Superintendent Mabel Richards.

The parents of the famous arealists The Flying Beckmans told us all about how their three boys (Ed, Will and Tom) got their start in show business. They entertained their Bevier friends in circus tents they made from gunny sacks, where match sticks were the price of admission. Later the toured the country with the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus!

The last stop on the tour was truly a highlight of the Sesquicentennial. Alex Rector, the man who discovered coal in Bevier, was portayed by his ggg-grandson Roger Rector...while his 4-g grandson, Seth Rector, became coal mining tycoon Thomas Wardell. FABULOUS!

What a wonderful surprise! Clarence Bevier, a 7th-generation descendant of Col. R.S. Bevier came from Florida to join our celebration! Clarence visited with many residents this past weekend, including our wonderful Sesquicentennial Chair, Patty Cheever (top) and the Pappenfoht girls (bottom). Clarence is not only a celebrity for descending from the Civil War hero after whom our town was named, but he has also set a Guiness Book World Record...for the fastest recitation of the alphabet...backwards! ~cg

Bevier Senior High Band played some favorite melodies. Wish them luck Saturday as they enter competition at Truman State University Band Day.

One of the Practical English vocabulary words this week was "nostalgia." Seems they could have visited tonight's celebration to see a demonstration of this word in action. Frank Adams, took the crowd on a memory lane stroll as he mentioned many memories of days gone by.

Gayla's post about Mr. Amedei made me remember Clarence Basler, who served as the Grand Marshall of our Homecoming parade for over 30 years. His prize-winning horses were awesome--they literally danced up the street! The first pic is My Happiness, the fabulous prancer. Okay...so the All-Stars had their 40th reunion at the Odd Fellows building on Saturday of Homecoming. I show up to play "roving reporter" for the blog...without a battery in my camera. I've never been a country music fan, but I found myself in a lawn chair on Friday night of Homecoming, watching the Johnny Lee show. I have to admit that I LOVED IT! What a great performer, and a real crowd-pleaser. He sounded great on all his hits -- "Lookin' For Love," "One In A Million," "Pickin' Up Strangers," "Prisoner of Hope," "Be There for Me Baby," "Cherokee Fiddle," "Sounds Like Love," "Hey Bartender," "Rollin' Lonely" and lots more. Between sets he graciously signed all autographs, and even went into the crowd to greet folks. Thanks to our great Homecoming Committee for bringing in these great entertainers each year! They do a fabulous job, and our Homecoming is one of the last venues where you can see such talent for FREE! ~cg

Here comes the 2008 Bevier Homecoming Parade. My shots were taken from midway, and soon you will also see more from Cindi,who was viewing from another vantage... (Don't forget to click photos to see larger view!) The day was breezy and nice... We have our Grand Marshall, John R. Amedei. Mr. Amedei was Superintendent of Bevier C-4 School for many years, and he hired me to teach English when I was only 21 years old.... first time teacher. He is kind, intelligent, a "big picture" thinker, and a great man. Much respect and praise for Mr. Amedei.

Salute to Bevier's Thursday Night Event...

Here we are at the evening festivities for Bevier Homecoming '08. Since this is both the Sesquicentennial Year and the 75th Homecoming, many of tonight's performances featured reunions of local performers from a few years ago.... But of course, it also blended in just the right amount of talent and input from today's young people. They need to make their memories, too! (You can click on any photo to see it in a larger view... )

Hope Ricker Marino's School of Twirling welcomed 44 former students who announced name, favorite song, and happy memories of days with Hope. We were told by one twirler that the ability to whirl that baton is a lifetime skill... and evidently that is sooo true. Every single one of the women on stage could spin their batons with ease. Such fun!
Here is a shot of the singing group known as the Bevierettes. Led by Joetta Amedei Walter, these young women took the crowd down memory lane a bit, too.
Don't forget the alumni band, who joined the Bevier Current High School Band for some wonderful music. They brought the crowd to its feet as they closed their program with the School Fight Song... Once a Wildcat, always a wildcat I think.
These pictures don't do anyone justice. Look at the rainbow of lovely young women competing for '08 Queen. They were judged on many factors including this evening wear event and a very important interview with the judges. They also were able to mingle with queens from the past at a tea held in the Baptist Church educational building. What a cool event. The queen for this year is Shelby Cross; first princess is Lindsey Basler; and second princess is Lindsay Lowe... Everyone looked beautiful,including more that didn't get in the line of the camera due to some speakers. Lovely girls!

First-Place Centennial Year Float

1958 - Baker's Market received first place in the Centennial parade. The float, "A Century of Memories," depicted a miner's home life in the early days. Thelma Baker, dressed in the fashion of long ago, was busy at the old-fashioned range, preparing supper for the family. The miner, Martin Baker, with his lunch bucket under his arm had returned from the day's work at the mine. The table was "set" and the delicious loaves of homemade bread awaited the family. Several children, in appropriate costumes, made up the family.

Bevier Sesquicentennial Style Show & Tea Sunday, October 5

A great event is planned for Sesquicentennial Sunday! The style show will focus on fashions from the last 50 years (and include some from the past 150 years!).

The committee is working now to secure outfits for all of these categories: wedding dresses, military uniforms, jeans, special occasion outfits, Bevier Homecoming queen contestant dresses, BHS sports and band uniforms, Little Mr. and Miss Bevier outfits and more. Any clothing that is too delicate to model will be placed on display.

All stories or remembrances of the clothing will add to the narration. If you have clothing to lend, want to model or have family that wants to model, or would like to join the planning committee, please contact Becky (Hunter) Belt. Don't miss this! Plan to wear a style from the past!

Lunch Ladies Extraordinaire!

Hazel Yocum, Lenora Tuttle and Kathleen Weber were the best of the best...lunch ladies, that is! The food my daughters were served in our big-city school was nothing even close to what these women could prepare from standard-issue ingredients. This photo is from 1968...back when the cafeteria was on the stage. At least once a year, someone would push back their chair a little too far and take a header onto the gym floor below. Also, when we had finished eating, we had to present our finished trays to the teacher for inspection. Heaven help you if you hadn't finished all your buttered peas!

Hazel was also famous for something else. At Halloween, she would make the most fabulous popcorn balls! Truly, they were legendary...our group of friends would plan our route around Hazel's house...knowing that she would go to bed early and we didn't want to miss out on her popcorn balls! Her daughter Jean sent us the recipe...and I think Hazel would get a real kick out of it being posted here for you. ~cg

Hazel Yocum's Popcorn Balls

5 quarts popped corn (she used Orville Redenbacher large kernel)
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vinegar (she never added this)
1 teaspoon vanilla (she never added this either)

Put the popped corn in a large pan of some kind (she would spray the pan with Pam for easier cleaning). Combine the sugar, water, salt, & syrup (would add the vinegar here if you want to use it). Cook to hard ball stage (250º) Add vanilla here if you want to use it. Pour slowly over popcorn; mix well to coat every kernel. Press in balls. Use butter or have ice water to dip hands in to keep from burning them. Makes 15 to 20 balls. Wrap in Saran Wrap.

We made them one year for Dad's bus kids and formed the balls around candy canes. You can also tint the syrup with green or red for Christmas. Mom always loved making these till she just wasn't able, then I helped her and finally did it all for her. She would have kids come to the door and say, "My Mom & Grandma are in the car and they used to come here can they have one too?" Jean

This was pre-Wildcat days, folks...the basketball team was the Eagles, and they played their home games outside. Mr. John R. School Carnival

Do you remember when the annual School Carnival meant cake walks, one-act plays, elementary grade musical productions and a king and queen chosen by how many pennies were tossed in a jar?

These pics are from 1976. There's Brenda Harrington and Mary Douglas -- they were HILARIOUS in the Carol Burnett skit "As the Stomach Turns" performed in the Coffee Klatch Playhouse (aka: the band room). Next, Danny Ausmus, Roger Rector, Beth Peukert, Toni Allen and Janis Howe wait to see who will be crowned by the previous Carnival King & Queen, Randy Watson and Marianne Perry (seated).

I wish I had photos from some of those elaborate productions from elementary school! I remember when we danced and sang to "Glow Worm." The stage was dark and we had little flashlights that blinked. One year we were all dressed as poinsettias...and I almost drove my dad crazy trying to memorize that song.

THE BEST, though, had to be "Babes in Toyland." I think Brenda Formento and Doug Boze had the lead roles -- the children who visited Toyland. Everyone else was some kind of toy. There were army men, tin soldiers, dancing dolls, stuffed toys and a jack-in-the-box on that stage. I don't remember what kind of toy I was...just that I was jealous of Brenda Harrington because I wanted to be a talking doll like her. The "Mini" B&S

Blessed be! Ray Pfeiffer was kind enough to work some PhotoShop magic on this photo. (Thank you, Ray!) Now you can better see the workmanship the men put into building the miniature steam engine that served to promote the Bevier & Southern in several parades around the area. Red Turpin did a lot of the work on this little train. This was taken in Marceline and the year was 1965. That's me...the engineer! The train was made of metal and wood and powered by a riding lawn mower motor. Since I was only five at the time, Debbie Osman (a teenager) actually did the driving on the parade route. We had such fun! ~cg

"Homecoming News was both made and worn by little Miss Marianne Perry, who took second prize in the character costume division of the 30th annual Bevier Homecoming parade. Her beruffled frock and bonnet were fashioned of Bevier Chronicle-Heralds and she carried as her purse a miniature mailbox with rolled up newspapers inside. Marianne is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Perry of Bevier."

This was the article posted in the Chronicle Herald about Marianne Perry Murphy. What a costume! Anyone who has been her student can attest she has not lost this flair for the news and history, her drive to achieve high goals in teaching, contests, and sports... or her attention to detail. Marianne currently teaches 8th grade at Bevier C-4, where she is a highly respected teacher, beloved by her students. She, her husband George, and their son Andrew have always participated with flair in the school and Homecoming events of Bevier... What a great photo!---- gjp

I just heard that heaven has welcomed another wonderful teacher. Mrs. Charlotte Craig taught business at BHS for several years. Just when she thought that she had moved on, she received another call from Mr. Amedei, our long-time superintendent; he was desperate to find a 3rd grade teacher for the 1967-1968 school year! You would have thought that Mrs. Craig had been an elementary school teacher all of her life. She was terrific. Wonderful memories! ~cg

The Wonderful Jim Buster

So many of us have a place in our hearts for Mr. B, James Buster, who taught at Bevier for many years, serving as 7th grade teacher and counselor. This photograph, taken at his retirement, captures Mr. B. doing something he often shunned, speaking in public. Although he goes on record as one of the most intelligent people we will ever meet, Mr. B.'s forte was conversation... witty, warm, and to the point of it all, conversation.

He was fond of sarcasm, loved to laugh, and was often known to say, "This too shall pass," whenever the going got truly tough. Whether you were a coworker, a student, or a friend, you have many Mr. B. stories. This would be the post to share your warmth and affection for this wonderful man. Chocolate Heaven

"This must be what heaven is like," said one Bevier Sesquicentennial leader as she surveyed the bounty for sale Saturday in the group's highly successful Chocolate Fest. Donations and proceeds from this event netted over $500 to be used for the Sesquicentennial Celebration in October. Purchases ranged from chocolate cookies to pies, Black Forest rolls, fudge, and gourmet cakes and brownies.

Saturday, April 26th... They Grand Marched at the school at 5 p.m. and then dined at the Pear Tree from 6 to 8. Then they danced in these fabulous decorations at the Black Diamond Building until 11. Following that many attended an After-Prom party at the school. If you attended or helped sponsor, we'd love you to post your thoughts and memories. What a lovely night.

Don't forget to attend the Black Diamond Rummage Sale this Friday and Saturday at the Black Diamond Building from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The proceeds from this event will go toward painting the Black Diamond Building in downtown Bevier.
Mmmmm.... brace yourselves for a delicious event! Bevier Sesquicentennial Committee will offer a Chocolate Fest Bake Sale at the Black Diamond Building on May 10th from 10 o'clock a.m. until sold out. Sounds fabulous, doesn't it?
And then brace yourselves for a real treat in downtown Bevier on June 22nd when the citizens of Bevier can attend an Italian Festival. Featured in the event will be food, wine, music and games.
Then at last it will be time for the big event itself: The Sesquicentennial Celebration will run October 3rd, 4th, and 5th all over the town of Bevier. One featured event during the celebration will be the tea and style show to be held on October 5th at the school.
The Sesquicentennial celebration will have its opening ceremony a5 o'clock p.m. with a dedication of the school bell. Speakers will follow and a musical presentation by Black Diamond Jubilee at the park from 8 to 10 o'clock. Saturday will feature a quilt show, a historic tour of the town, kid's day, a car show, rock and roll day, cemetery theater, fireworks, and entertainment. More details of this once in a lifetime event will follow. Just be sure to mark your calendars and plan to be in town for the whole party.

Born in Bevier -- Arthur "Jack" Fascinato

Bevier has produced many, many talented musical artists, and perhaps the one most celebrated is Jack Fascinato, born in Bevier in 1915. Best known as the creative musical director of the children’s TV series “Kukla, Fran & Ollie,” Fascinato received great acclaim for his complex productions — including a performance of “St. George and the Dragon” featuring Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, as well as his annual staging of the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta “The Mikado.” Later he joined Capitol Records to collaborate with rising country crossover star Tennessee Ernie Ford. The partnership was hugely successful, and in the years to come Fascinato arranged and conducted close to two dozen Ford LPs, scoring a number of hits including “Sixteen Tons.” One of his Fascinato’s own albums, “Music from a Surplus Store” — is a highly collectible “Holy Grail” for space-age pop collectors.

Shoemaker RV Center

Shoemaker RV Center was a wonderful asset to our community for many years. I was very sad to hear of Chet Shoemaker's passing last October. I remember how proud and excited he was when the business was all under construction! He hired this group of girls to help paint the building's interior and detail the trade-in units. We were making money for our senior trip and Chet certainly was wonderful to us. That's Chet above, and a few of the members of the class of 1977 -- Mary Douglas, Genia Smith, Brenda Harrington, me, and Beth Peukert. With Chet's help, our class went to Florida two years later! ~CG

Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

Growing up in Bevier meant spending time at the ball park! Whether it was a high school game or the Bevier All-Stars taking the field, ball games were definitely a family event. This pic is from 1969, and there is Chester and Elizabeth Dwiggins, Becky Dwiggins, Bonnie Harrington, Regina Brant and Brenda Harrington.

I remember some of the "lucky" kids got to make some extra cash by collecting discarded pop bottles and turning them in at the stand for deposit money. Whenever a foul ball was hit, a crowd of boys would chase after it. They could return it to the team and get a dime! Though I was never allowed to take advantage of these money-making opportunities, I can tell you that the popcorn made in the Bevier ball park stand and served in a plain brown bag by Mr. Willie Jones was the best popcorn EVER! ~CG

Art show display

During the Spuds Bar Fund raiser today, guests were treated to tables of Bevier memorabilia. These keepsakes are usually displayed at the Black Diamond Building, but for today, community members could see them in a different surrounding. Also displayed today were art projects created by the Bevier art students, taught by Bridget Weiman.

Spuds Bar menu was delicious and included a lavish baked potato and a choice of topping from chili, to butter, broccoli and cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, cottage cheese, and more. Desserts of homemade pie finished the meal.

Ready for Rebekahs

Here's a cool pic of Viola and Helen Slightom...ready for a meeting of Venus Rebekah Lodge #142, decked out in their rhinestone jewelry and pretty formals...yep, they made those themselves. My dad would say, "Your mother is going to the hen party tonight."

I remember those slim volumes of "secret work" that mom had to memorize. She'd get mad if she caught me looking at them. (Though I don't know why. They were written in code anyway). On meeting night there was always something yummy-smelling in the kitchen and I would hear, "Don't touch that! It's for lodge!" Dang!

As one of the last to be inducted into #142 before it folded, I can tell you that it was, really, a cool organization. Think about it. Once a month you get out and play dress-up with your girlfriends! How cool is that?

It's easy for us to think that it was a different time, and those ladies "didn't have jobs" and had plenty of time for things like lodge meetings, but then again...I'm not hanging out my laundry on a clothesline or plucking my own chickens these days. How many of us could benefit from spending a bit more time out with our girlfriends? Maybe someday we should bring back the Rebekahs to Bevier, hmm? ~CG

The Workhorse of Bee-Veer Mine

One of the largest, mobile land-stripping machines of its day was the workhorse of the Bee-Veer mine. It stood 12 stories tall, weighed in at 3,210 tons and sported a 65-cubic-yard bucket and a boom that reached 170 feet in length. My uncle, Paul E. "Gene" Slightom, was one of the operators. The cab was on the second floor, which he reached by elevator. The maintenance men worked on the third floor. Let's take the time to document the names of all the individuals who worked on this magnificient piece of machinery, before those names are lost to the past! Please leave your post now! ~CG
